What it takes to succeed as a lawyer
There are some key skills you need to succeed as a lawyer. I would say that the most important thing is to be able to talk to clients as if they were your friends. It's not all small talk but taking a genuine interest in them as people will get you far. Just relax and ask them about their lives. A few good questions can get you far. You also need to know the law of course. The technical skills will come over the years as long as you read the right journals. Ask a successful lawyer who has been involved in your discipline for years what they read. Then read it. Keep a list of contacts. Keep talking to them even if it looks like they won't give you work. Don't stalk them but other than that keeping in touch is good. |
